Hand carved from a single piece of wood, a commodity hard to come by in the Sahara, the Tuareg (nomadic people of the Sahara) used these bowls to store soured milk, a staple in their diets. Repaired, never discarded, these bowls would last for years and due to their lighter weight, versus a clay bowl, were easier to transport. This particular bowl has a beautiful hand carved design around a beveled edge. Another important feature are the metal strips used to mend a crack who knows how long ago. Never discarded, repairs are key to nomadic life as resources are scarce.
Dimensions:
17.5” D x 8” H
Weight:
11 lbs
