Vintage Tuareg hand carved wooden bowl with geometric carvings
Hand carved from a single piece of wood, a commodity hard to come by in the Sahara, the Tuareg (nomadic people of the Sahara) used these bowls to store soured milk, a staple in their diets. Repaired, never discarded, these bowls would last for years and due to their lighter weight, versus a clay bowl, were easier to transport. This bowl has geometric designs hand carved on the outer rim, a chip (see photo), and metal fasteners used for repair.
